by Carla Wilson Top 10 tips when shopping for a wedding dress! 1. Pick up some bridal magazines or go to the library to browse their bridal magazines and get ideas for what styles you like. Sit down and search wedding websites for bridal wear. This will help you get a feel for what is out there and what you like.
2. Ask your friends, family, and coworkers where the good bridal stores are to go. Book an appointment with a reputable retailer. Make sure you allow yourself an hour to be at the bridal store.
3. Ask your closest friend, bridal party, parent or whom you feel comfortable with and trust to come shopping with you. Make it a fun day and make time for a lunch date.
4. Be upfront with the bridal consultant on the price you want to spend and keep in that range. The bridal consultant I had was excellent and I ended up getting my dress cheaper than what I planned on. This is a good time to show the bridal consultant pictures you have cut out or printed off. She/he can get a feel for your style.
5. Try on a couple of different styles. Be open to suggestion. You may discover that the dress you thought wasn’t very nice on the rack looks superb on you! Ask the bridal consultant what styles suite your body type. But remember, it has to be a wedding dress you feel comfortable, sexy, and beautiful in.
6. Only shop at 2 or 3 bridal stores in one day. It takes a lot of time and energy to try on wedding dresses. Don’t make any decisions that day. You need time to sleep on it.
7. If you have narrowed your search down to 2 or 3 dresses, get the name of the manufacturer or designer and check if another store carries the same bridal dress. I got my wedding dress across the street from one bridal shop for $300 cheaper. It can save you lots of money.
8. Don’t hesitate to try second hand bridal shops. You may find a dress for 50% off for the same dress you have chosen. But watch for tears, beads falling off and snags. It has to be in tip top shape for you!
9. Once you’ve decided on your wedding dress, wait until your final alterations are done to buy all your accessories. You may need a very high heel or a flat heel depending how the alterations worked out.
10. Be sure you have ordered your wedding dress way ahead of your wedding day! You will have a million things to plan for your wedding day! by Penny Olson I think that the best place to start when making plans for your wedding is turn to your dreams. Let’s face it, we are women, and we've had a picture painted in our minds of how this day "should be" since we could pick buds and blooms from our mothers' rose bushes and pretend that we were brides. So we've had a pretty good idea of what we are looking for long before we actually set ourselves free in the endless sea of choices in styles, colors, themes, and even textures of the wedding world. One of the first things that most brides will do is start to shop for their dress. Sometimes, as I did, you will find that the "Perfect Princess Dress" that you always thought you'd have, just doesn’t work for you. But this is absolutely fine, at least it will give you a place to start and you can take it from there. I would also suggest trying on everything that even slightly tickles your fancy. You may be surprised at what you like and what you do not. The only reason that I mention this in an article on choosing your jewelry is because life will be much easier if you choose your dress prior to choosing your accessories, not the other way around.
First, take into consideration the cut of your dress. A sleeveless dress can carry a different shape of necklace and allow for more space on your chest for decoration. A halter-cut may be more appropriate for a very simple, single strand necklace or you may want to skip a necklace all together and focus on a pretty pair of earrings and a bracelet. Keep in mind that these are only suggestions and make decisions that will make you happy, it is your day after all!
Second, have a good look at the way that your dress is decorated. It could have a very large pattern that covers the entire dress with sequins and pearls form head to toe. Or, it could be very simple with the only accents being in the cuts of the fabric such as different layering of materials, gathers, or pleats. The overall style of the dress is a crucial detail to consider when choosing jewelry that will compliment your ensemble. If you do not take the style of your dress into consideration, you could end up with a result that looks awkward and takes away from the over-all look that you’ve set out to accomplish.
With simpler dresses, I would suggest going with jewelry that is more elaborate such as the Swarovski Three Point Crystal Necklace. Necklaces with this much detail work well with dresses that don’t have much beadwork and really give the dress the classic statement that it deserves.
With dresses that have alot of detail, I would suggest jewelry that will follow the theme of decorations in the dress, but go with something that will not understate the dress. For a dress that has a lot of sequins and pearls over the entire bodice, the Swarovski Crystal and Single to Double Pearl Necklace would be the perfect companion.
Make sure that all of your jewelry coordinates. You don’t have to buy a set, although it would make your job of getting a classic look much easier and guarantee a flawless match. But if you decide to "mix and match" your jewelry, be sure that they have common elements, such as shapes, colors, styles or stones.

by Mary Bailis Fashion styles are forever changing. What do this year's changes bring forth? Fashion is up and down and all around this year. Accessories are going to sizzle this summer, hemlines are going down a bit, pants waistlines are going up, necklaces are going down, scarves are fluid, earrings are dangling, handbags get soft, and belts are back. Feminine, sexy and sultry styles will keep those heads turning. Sheers, crocheted lace, silky satin and flowing gauze will be everywhere. Comfy cool and sexy, sounds like a great year for women! Accessories are fabulous this year and are leaning in the arts & craft direction. We will start with necklaces. They are beady, long and plentiful. Where a single large beaded strand with artful beads or pair them up with several. Long is where they are at as well as big and with interesting beads. Plastic, glass, wood, handmade, crocheted, and metal beads in all variations have invaded the necklace world. Find them beaded alone or with lace, sheer or ribbon. Artisans beware; fabulous finds are in high demand! While you are at it, dangling earrings to match will complete the ensemble. Hoops and beads are dangling in the earring category. Out with the chandeliers and in come the dangling beads.
Belts are back big-time accentuating the waistlines. In the gym lately? You'll need it this year! Belts run the gamut this year in all styles. Wide big belts are back as well as plenty of other styles. Crocheted lace belts, pom pom end belts, leather, and fabric belts are all a hot ticket. Sheer or lace belts are big that can be used two fold. You can where them as a belt or as a scarf. Get creative and find those great finds at art fairs in fabric belts or crocheted belts.
Gold is big this season. Find it in handbags, jewelry, clothing and shoes. Don't go overboard with gold; remember a little goes a long way. Don't cover yourself in gold from head to toe; you'll look like a left over Christmas ornament! Gold shoes and a great gold handbag will look great with any outfit and you will not be overdoing it.
Handbags are always a favorite; you can never have enough of them. Soft leathers, straw and fabrics are very in. Larger size handbags are big. Look for lots of gathered ends on the top and visible pockets on the outside. Straw is hot in all colors and new styles, crochet and appliques are abundant. You will see simple designs to more artistic designs. Stick with simple if your outfit is strikingly fabulous. When going for a more conservative or simple style, then go with a more artistic handbag to set it off.
The ups and downs have it this year. Necklaces are going down as well as hemlines. Not too much though, just mini's are out. Look for knee length and long flowing skirts and dresses. Lacey, satin, sheers and gauze is it for skirts and dresses. Yes, I did say dresses; they are making a comeback big-time. Comfy and sexy at the same time! Skirts styles are very full along with A-lines are very in. Pants waistlines are starting to go up which is what is bringing belts back in. It may take a while but at least they are not going down any farther. Was there any room left to go?

by Sheila Dicks If we didn’t have enough to think about as we get older – aging parents, empty nests, new jobs, etc. we also have to deal with changing bodies and how to clothe them. Don’t despair all is not lost, you can look great after forty and not have to sneak into your daughter’s closet to do it. Many women who are not sure how to deal with thick waists and bulging tummies head straight for the baggy rack and try to conceal their bodies with shapeless clothing. And to make matters worse, they wear their makeup and hair the same way they always have. The key to looking great after forty is to make subtle changes in your clothing, hair and makeup that will equal a facelift and a trainer – well, maybe not that much difference. Here are some tips that you can put into practice right away. 1. Wear your skirts at the knee with a great pair of shoes to show off one of the most ageless and flattering parts of your body – your legs- they stay looking younger longer.
2. Wear tailored clothes, such as shaped jackets that glide over your tummy and waist. Stay away from boxy, baggy jackets and tops that hang from the bust and add five pounds.
3. The easiest way to put pizzazz into your outfit without looking overdone is to update your shoes and purses. If you carry a purse that looks like your grandmother’s – square and boring you’ll look outdated. Choose purses in different shapes and colors that will add interest. There are lots of styles and shapes available, the most flattering being a shoulder bag that fits nicely under your arm.
4. Stay away from clothing that has ‘old lady’ written all over it, such as huge shoulder pads, narrow pant legs, tiny prints, sweaters with embroidered flowers and big fancy buttons. If it’s something your mother would wear then it is not something for you.
5. To look fashionable you don’t have to wear the latest styles. Stick to classic lines that suit your body type and develop a look that reflects your personality and lifestyle.

Choose a few practical purchases, and make room for a few compulsive ones too! Eleven Fashion Must Haves Spring through Fall 2006:
1. Blouses are back!
Girlie dressing has returned with blousy style in ruffles, flounces and fancy neck-ties. Sleeves are unique, maybe a bit blouson with gathering at the shoulders. Isn't fabric luxurious? Pick your slinky tops with bare shoulders and/or your bare back. Your waist can be loose or fitted. Tops can be plain or decorated.
2. Bags with structure.
Put away the slouch bag for now. Bags in 2006 see a trend toward dome shapes, contrasting trims and buckles. Accessorize your smart new bag with some bling! Try adding handbag charms for a more designer look.
3. Updated Accessories.
Find hip slung belts (they can be glitzy), super skinny to 2"-3" thick. Pick up a pair of large framed sunglasses with color tint lenses. Fresh jewelry is sparkly, chokers are beaded with loose strands cascading, earrings are hoops or big and beautiful. Choose shoes with fantastic color, be they flat slides or strappy stilettos. Last but not least, a very large sun hat (think Sophia Loren).
4. Military feminine.
If you can get your hands on it, please do! Plan to wear your boots and look Eastern bloc mysterious undercover agent unbelievable. Blue-grey and steely colors form smart top-coats with faux fur trim. Narrow army coats sport distinct buttons and epaulettes. Soften your hard-as-nails look with a hint of lace cami that peeks out from underneath the lapel of your trench, or a surprisingly gorgeous fabric pencil line, to the knee or just above, slits at the side or back.
5. Tailored suiting.
Play classy at work and put your curves into straight tailored looks. Create the complete look for fall with charcoal and brown tweeds with leather accessories, up-dos and strong jewelry. Keep an eye out for some tweed competition in the form of rich brocades and jacquards.
6. Midnight blue.
If you don't go navy, go lighter than navy! These blues partner beautifully with neutrals and all other colors. A simple, classic, understated outfit might comprise of a midnight blue fancy top and your favorite dark blue jeans. Bags with structure.

7. Silhouettes with contrast.
Go for a slim line with volume on top or bottom. If you go for volume on the bottom, go retro, but more subtle with a 60's style tulip skirt. If you go for volume on the top, remember to keep the bottom slim. Try a boxy to the waist jacket with a zipped front opening.
8.Dresses with drama.
Get into the swing of a dance dress, or pounce on a cocktail-length dress. Look for volume down below and sexy detailing atop the bust-line like ruching. Your dress can be hip-hugging and sexy with bare shoulders or a bare back or both. Or a skirt and top suit that will give you a dressier look.
9. Prints, prints and more prints!
Forget the minimalism of the 90's. Try out great new designs or florals either head to toe or, say neck to waist if you're feeling a bit non-committal. Waist to ankles wear your jeans or plain bottoms or skirt. Eventually you'll be print literate. Pull out those scarves, and think about purchasing a few fresh for the upcoming seasons- even if you just don it on your bag.
10. Blouses Victorian style.
Dress up to go out with authentic vintage style. Not from your great- aunt's collection, but from days of the less recent past. Go all out lacey and sheer or frilly and feminine. Add a Victorian look to your favorite white shirt . . . button it up high, and add a bit of ribbon or lace at your neck!

For those lucky enough to dress in womens casual clothes everyday, the challenges could be many, but a few larger ones are, how to build a core wardrobe of basics with enough variety to keep it from getting boring and how to match these varieties without looking like a slob.
Here are some tips to help women build their casual attire:
Buy your casual clothes the same way you would buy career clothes: always thinking about building your best womens casual attire wardrobe. For example, when choosing your casual wear for women, choose cohesive pieces and build them around basic styles. For casual clothing the best approach is three colors for the best mix-and-match wardrobe - khaki, denim, tan; black, khaki, white; etc.
And please don't forget about a great casual shoe because nothing kills a chics sporty casual attire like a pair of white running shoes. Stick with a pair of boots or sandals, etc. You probably won't get stopped by the "bad wardrobe police" with boots and they go with almost all casual clothing.
Use casual accessories and handbags -- especially when it comes to casaul wear for women. No two worlds are more distant from one another than the classic look and womens casual attire. Please don't try to mix a gold and diamond watch with a sweatshirt unless you're Queen Latifah. Try to stay away from mixing styles.
Keep your casual clothes in good shape -- don't be lazy if they need to be ironed then iron them, if they need to be cleaned then clean them, you get the point.
Stay far away from womens casual wear cliches - like baggy sweats. Baggy sweats is for lounging around the house only and if you are certain no one will see you out of your standard casual clothes. Remember today you might have a reputation to up hold. Instead, opt for some in style womens attire, a great track suit that comes with a strong fitted look in fun colors and rich fabrics like velour or terry.
Don't get ridiculous or outrageous about casual attire for women. Remember it is just a style which can be fun and look good at the same time. So, if you're working in the garden or cleaning the house, then wear whatever works for you and leave your casual clothes for those right days.

by Davina deWitts Casually doing a bit of window shopping a few years back in one of Italy’s ‘oh so fashionable’ little lane ways, I noticed that pointy toe stiletto’s were everywhere. Glancing down at my round toe Mary Jane’s I’d just purchased before leaving Australia, I was feeling both repulsed and anxious. Repulsed because I thought pointy toe stiletto’s were ugly, and anxious because I knew it was only a matter of time before I would be forking out the lire to purchase them. Two weeks later, I had succumbed. The trend had gotten the better of me, despite how ridiculous I looked when the heels got caught in the uneven Italian pavement every time I walked down the street (which was about every three steps). So what was it that changed my mind? I believe the answer lies in the hands of, well, a handful of people called ‘Trend Analysts’ AKA The Fashion Police. Their job: to serve and protect the commercial interests of fashion companies across the globe. How? By dissecting the public's psychology of what will be the next trend will be by way of extensive travel and shopping expeditions (those bastards). These ‘trend analysts’ then report back to analysis companies, who then go on to consolidate their findings in industry magazines and websites for the use of fashion companies.
I’d like to say that fashion companies use analysis companies because they’re lazy, but it’s certainly not the case. They’re just scared to make a mistake (can you imagine manufacturing 1000 pairs of high waisted skinny leg jeans only to find that everyone was going for low rise bootleg? Ebay auctioning them is NOT a solution here). There are also unbelievable time constraints between the seasons. So most designers design their range around what they are fed, and if they’re lucky they get to travel around Europe and Japan to buy garments to ‘take inspiration from’. This is why we get a slight variation of the trend theme every season; all our designers are shopping in the same store in London! If you want to see something really interesting, just observe the women with suitcases in major department stores buying size ten (when they are size 12) at the start of every season. Ask them what they do for a living.
Can you see we are at the hands of a conspiracy!? We need to take action. I urge you to burn your pleather Fendi bags! Let’s make up our own trends! I myself am going to knit and extended version of the merkin (If you don’t know what one is, I advise you Google it because I’m certainly not about to explain). Yep, it’s going to be a toasty winter for me rugged up in my black merkin cardigan…
Which brings me back to my original thought at the beginning of this piece (merkins also have the power to bring people back to what they were originally thinking). What was it that made me buy those pointy toe high heels I now so dearly cherish? I believe it comes down to one word: agreement. Agreement by trend analysts, agreement by industry magazines, agreement by designers, agreement in fashion magazines, agreement throughout the stores, and finally, agreement by you. Agreement creates our fashion reality. Not always bad, but within the safety of agreement comes a lack of innovation. And that’s why we need those quirky fashion revolutionaries; so we can steel their ideas, manufacture them times a million, and sell the homogenized version back to you. Back to square one. We again enter into a state of agreement. Weird world we’re living in ain’t it? Now where did I put my knitting needles and my merkin ‘wool’ supply..?

Red is the new color for brides to wear while walking down the aisle in Las Vegas. Most brides who choose to wear red are wearing wine red corsets with white, flowing, layered skirts. Some of the skirts even have detailed red on it: red sequins, red jewels, or even red ribbons.
Las Vegas wedding fashions may never be the same. Grooms are already dressing in red to match their brides dresses. But even more shocking is that someone else will be wearing the white?
It is fast becoming a custom in Las Vegas for the brides maids to wear the white while the Las Vegas bride sports the red. Though the brides maids dresses don’t look like wedding dresses, it is exceptional to note that brides definitely stand out with their red wedding dresses.
Many Las Vegas brides have found their red wedding dresses online, but others have had them custom made. Custom wedding dress makers are far from scarce in Las Vegas.

by Mary Bailis Fashion week is over in New York City and fall styles have been released. It always amazes me to be talking about fall styles when spring has not even sprung yet. Here it is! Colors are dark and neutral but accessories are sizzling and spruce up those colors of the evening. There is plenty to keep from this winter season and plenty to get rid of. Let us start with colors. Think of nightfall when it comes to fall color according to Pantone. The colors are very dark and neutral. Black is always in, dominated the runways by far from other colors. Brown known this season as Italian plum is still big. You will see a touch of garnet, spicy orange and purple drab. You may have to look hard, but they will be there. There will also be doe, a taupe color and griffin, good old gray. The color that tops all and is a must have for the season is deep cobalt, otherwise known as navy. Navy is being paired with all of the above including brown. You will see navy sweaters with brown skirts. Black dominated but had a touch of one of the colors above added to the outfit. There was plenty of play with different shades of black; it is not just solid black this season. Find it in shears, embroidery, and used in all different ways.
So pack away your blacks and browns from this season and pull them out in the fall. Add to your wardrobe plenty of navy and a touch of gray. There will be a touch of animal prints. Leopard is always a popular choice but zebra is the season's hottest choice. Get a short zebra pencil skirt (along with a black one) with a black or brown sweater or a jacket with faux fur trim; add opaque black tights and knee high boots and you are on your way to being in fashion for the fall. Remember a little animal print goes a long way. You want it to accentuate your outfit not overpower it.
Spring fashions have brought in a-line skirts, full skirts and bubble skirts. These will be carried over into the fall so hold on to them. The fall will add mini and short pencil skirts. Black pencil skirts are a staple for your wardrobe. Shirt dresses and sheaths are back and looking very sophisticated. Dresses have been making a come back the past year and are still riding on that trend. Grey trousers are a must have addition. Pants waistlines are on the rise, still at the hips but not as low as they were. Pair them up with a great fabric belt with a fancy buckle to set it off. No more boot leg cut, skinny pants and jeans are in. Hold on to the jackets, they are still a big item. Velvet and suede jackets are hot as well as any with faux fur collars. Cashmere coats trimmed in faux fur or shearling will be a great luxury item.
Colors and clothing for fall are the styles of the night. So drab you say? Not really, they are sexy, feminine and sophisticated. Accessories and embellishments will set them apart and make them exciting. This will be the year for fabulous accessories that will bring those nighttime colors into the day. Of course, they light up the evenings also.
