by Donna McAlister You are feeling good about yourself and you want to show the world that you have something to offer. You feel that way inside but you look says something totally different. How to get the outside to match how you feel on the inside? Well you have got to ‘Dress for Success’. But how do you accomplish this? Number one you have got the dress the part and by dressing for the part I mean that you have got to dress for the job, career, or business that you want, not for the one that you currently have. Example if you wanted to be a successful Hair Stylish, you have got to look like you have your hair in order. Would want to go to a Hair Stylist whose hair was always a mess? I don’t think so. This analogy could be used in just about every profession.
Now this does not mean that you have got to go out and spend an exceptional amount of money to get a whole new look. This new look can be accomplished by adding a few pieces of accessories to your existing wardrobe.
Some of the simple tips that I find useful are:
1) Add a piece of jewelry to an outfit. It can be a nice bracelet, a simple necklace, a pair of earrings or even a nice watch. Don’t over do it with the jewelry. Just add something simple to your already existing outfit.
2) Dress up a pair of jeans. I know we dress up for work five days a week and we want a day where we can just tone things down and relax. Dressing up a pair of jeans can be as simple as changing from an old t-shirt to a nicer shirt or maybe a blouse. You can even add a simple jacket depending on the outing.
3) Update you current handbag. By adding a simple handbag you can create a totally different style in the way that an outfit looks and the way that you feel. Handbags are an accessory to any outfit and you should think of it as such.
4) Incorporate some simple beauty tips such as drinking plenty of water. Water promotes rejuvenation of the skin to give the skin a natural healthy glow.
5) Take some time out for yourself. Every one needs time to unwind and relax. In a previous article that I wrote “Finding Time to Pamper Yourself,” I outlined some tips to follow to assist in taking and making the time for yourself.
Remember that the key to looking and feeling your best is to take care of yourself. If you incorporate some of these tips that I mentioned you can be on your way to build up your self confidence while creating or updating your style.

by Sintilia Miecevole If you are the average woman, knowing all the ins and outs of fashion is not something you have time to learn and research. With our busy lives, we just buy what we think will look nice and is affordable. However, there are some simple rules you can follow to keep yourself “In Fashion”, so to speak. These rules are: 1. Don’t try to update your whole wardrobe at once! It’s always best to try out “a look” or “new fashion” before buying out the store. You may find that they look is great for you and then you can add more pieces when you can. Sometimes you will find the look is all wrong for you, so adding only a few pieces won’t break your bank account.
2. You should never buy something you feel you are ‘too old’ to wear! If you do buy it, you probably won’t wear it because you won’t feel comfortable in it.
3. You shouldn’t be scared to dress outside of your normal age group! When you are 55, that doesn’t automatically take mini skirts out of your wardrobe. Just because you are 22, that doesn’t mean you have to wear mini skirts, either. Go with the fashion and style you look good in and feel comfortable wearing.
4. Black clothes almost always look more flattering, expensive and sophisticated! Having some black “staple” clothing is always a good fashion idea.
5. When you don’t have money, don’t go shopping! Buying cheap clothing just because you went shopping is usually a bad investment. It won’t be what you really wanted and you probably won’t wear that fashion of clothing much.
6. Don’t shop based on fashion fads! When you’ve heard about a particular fashion fad, it will probably be over! Fad fashion never has a long lifespan, so stick with the general fashion trends.
7. Step outside your “fashion box” for a while! If you are normally conservative, try a miniskirt or some low cut jeans for a change. Not comfortable with that…just add a fringed or sequins handbag to your collection. Everyone, no matter their fashion sense, should have fun with the fashions they wear on occasion. Even though you will normally go back to your old look, you will probably have a new approach to it.
8. Don’t let fashion jeopardize your professional image! See-through, low neckline, sleazy fashions will never do wonders for your career. Those fashions are simply inappropriate for the 9 to 5 world.
9. Fashion is only a small part of the whole “you”! If you put a lot of time and effort into other aspects of your life, what you wear won’t be what everyone notices about you. Don’t spend all your time worrying about your wardrobe fashion.
10. When you look at fashion, it is all about YOU! Love a look…look great in it…can afford the clothing…then buy it! Fashion is just that simple!

by Jay Dezelic Ok, the subject of men's underwear is not really that interesting. What's really interesting though, is how many people on the Internet want to know something about men's underwear. Variations of men's undergarments are searched even more frequently than women's underwear. - Considering that women buy the vast majority of clothing in the US, that's a surprise. What is with this fascination of men's underwear anyway? By all intensive purposes, it should be a very boring and dull subject. - Right? That's because the most popular underwear worn by men is basic boxer shorts or those plain white briefs you find at nearly every discount store called "tighty-whities". In the last decade or so, the men's underwear departments in retail stores have blossomed from drab white to a plethora of color. Even sexy men's thongs and colorful men's micro bikini briefs are merchandised front and center in mainstream retail. Sexy men's underwear fashions are getting even more popular in Europe (where people are generally in better shape and have less hang-ups about their body image). Male bikini underwear has been a standard in regions of South America for many years.
The reason for the heavy Internet traffic on this subject is not clear. Maybe some of the otherwise mass-market male consumers are getting board with standard utilitarian undergarments offered to men. Historically, there has been a much broader range of under garments offered to women over the years while comparatively, so few choices have been offered to men. Reportedly, specialty undergarments for both men and women are among one of the fastest growing segment of the apparel industry. While the market for men's sheer underwear is probably much smaller than for women's, there are frequent searches conducted every day for variations of men's see through underwear. Perhaps the wives and significant others are also getting bored with what they see on their partner at bedtime?
There are over 90,000 pages on the Internet mentioning men's lingerie. The Internet has allowed specialty online retailers to prosper without having to build up expensive mass-market distribution for their goods. Some are saying that there is a new kind of consumer on the horizon dubbed as the "metrosexual male". - These are men who are active consumers of fashion and personal care products that enhance visual appearance.
The last couple hundered years have been rough on the male species. From frequent wars and the resulting toil of the rapid progression of industrialization, men became the workhorse while women (the lucky ones anyway) became the sole beneficiaries of pampering and indulgence. As society steams forward from the technology age to the information age, men are finding time to participate in the vanity of life.
A lot of younger men nowadays are spending more effort to look their best. From hair products and teeth whitening, to cosmetics and hair-loss treatment, men are getting into the "fashion" game. No-doubt, due to the help of savvy vanity product manufactures who gleam for new market frontiers to concur. Vying for space at the shopping districts and cosmetic counters now are manufacturers of effeminate men's products. For the men's fashion world, a vicious circle has begun. - As it did for women many decades ago.
The problem for most men is that the situation can't be ignored. For instance, if everyone around you gets a makeover, you don't look so attractive anymore. So off we go to spruce up our look just to keep pace. Specialty retailers seem to be anticipating a kind of a renaissance movement in the men's fashion world. The surge of interest in men's underwear may be a barometer of things to come. So next time you feel compelled to buy those men's stretch jeans, you might be coaxed into buying a men's micro thong to keep your physic in best form.

by Donna Monday A new fashion year is here and so are the latest styles for women looking to freshen up their wardrobes. Ladies, good news. Femininity is back! From the office to casual wear, you can show off the power of your femininity while still taking care of business. Jackets are a great way to add flair and style to your pants and skirts. Boucle jackets are hot. Also, pairing a colorful denim jacket with a flouncy skirt gives you a variety options for a more dressed up casual look.
You should have at least one boucle jacket in your closet. Boucle is very chic and can dress up a pair of black pants or a black skirt very easily. Boucle jackets come in a variety of colors. Some have removable flower pins, some have ruffles, etc. In celebrity circles it’s popular to pair a boucle jacket with jeans and high heels or boots. Very chic.
Skirts are longer, falling either just above the knee or just below the knee. You’ll find skirts with asymmetric cuts, ruffles at the bottom, or with a free flowing feel. Why not add a flowery or ethnic print skirt to your collection. Pair it with a jean jacket in blue, pink or white for extra pizzazz.
Colorful ponchos and shrug wraps (wraps that are fitted and tie in the middle) are great accent pieces to wear over plain black or white tops. Speaking of tops, try a shirt or blouse in a bold funky print to spice things up a bit. Plus size women are no longer bound by arcane rules that say they can’t wear prints. Dress for your personality.
Shopping for new clothes is a fun experience and the options for plus size women are better than ever. You’ll find all the new trends and plus size fashion styles to create your own feminine chic look at great online shops like: Lane Bryant, Catherines, Avenue, Just My Size, Making It Big, Ulla Popken, Size Appeal, Kiyonna and more.

by Sher Matsen Summers far from over and there is still time to enjoy those gorgeous summer fashions. Here’s our top picks for “ Gotta Have It Summer Fashions “ Every woman should have some big clunky plastic bangles and bracelets in a multitude of colors. These aren’t just fun for the summer they add color and lift your mood during the winter months.
To go with those bangles don’t forget to add a couple of funky purses. Straw and leather bags are very popular this year as are colorful designer bags. No need to have to spend big bucks for Vuiton or Versace as there are plenty of mass produced bags that will do the job. Big isn’t only fashionable it’s very handy for those summer trips.
You can pack your water, sunglasses, sunscreen, and what ever else you need to drag along in the warmer months. Almost like a mini suitcase and for us women that’s important.
Don’t forget to pick up a few of the very fashionable halter tops that have hit the stores this season. Unlike the slinky halters of the 1970s these are full length tanks with the sexy halter top. Great for hiding those extra tummy roles.
They are available in a wide range of materials accented with rhinestones, laced, or an accent ethnic fabric. And at the end of the summer you don’t need to pack these away, just add a blouse or blazer overtop and your good late into the fall season.
The skirts this season are not only fashionable, they are comfortable and functional. Nicely fitted waste and thigh then flaring to a full body just above the knee. They are available in a variety of lengths from above the knee to ankle length.
This style works great for work and casual. You can easily move around, bend, and stretch without having to worry about it. The flare keeps you cool and is unrestricting. Also available in a variety of fabrics and perfect for the summer and fall season.
Shorts this season vary from short shorts to dress shorts. Depending on how fit your legs are will depend on what styles you can wear. Colors range from cool and refreshing white, to kaki, to vibrant fuchsia or turquoise. You pick!
This season leaves plenty of options for shoes from flip flops to wedges in a variety of heel heights. You can mix and match to your hearts content.
Rhinestones are very popular adornment on shoes this season. Even better the summer fashions can take you into late fall with no problem.
The wedge heal is not only fashionable, it’s very comfortable. It’s great to see it make a comeback from the late 70s. This is a shoe that is very flexible.
Don’t forget to add pair of sunglasses, in fact add a few so you’ve got a pair to cover every mood. Fun, sexy, sophisticated? Your sunglasses can say plenty. If you wear glasses you can either get prescription sunglasses or clip ons to keep your eyes protected.
Remember summer is a fun time. It’s the season that allows us to lighten up our wardrobe and enjoy what summer has to offer. Every wardrobe this summer has gotta have it summer fashions!

by Linda Gray Clothes and skin cream are far removed from potting out your begonias, or digging a trench for a line of potatoes. But the clothes you wear are important for your protection in the garden. Here are six simple but effective solutions to various gardening hazards... 1. Starting from the top, you need to protect your head. Body heat escapes through the head and in the cold weather a warm hat should be worn. Knit yourself a 'gardening crazy' hat or buy a simple woollen hat on the high street.
And in the summer, even more attention should be paid to the head. The sun's rays are not only hot but they actually burn you. We all know this but how easy it is to forget when you want to soak up the sun after months of grey or cold weather. Invest in a cool sunhat. Not only will it help protect you from sunstroke, it will also protect against the drying out of your hair and skin.
2. Keep one old comfortable jacket or short coat, preferably with fairly large pockets, especially for the garden. When you're working, you won't need to worry about dirty marks. Leave them there, it's all part of the gardener's designer uniform!
3. Suitable trousers.. again keep a couple of old pairs especially for gardening. Wear heavy duty jeans for heavy duty work. A good waterproof pair are handy in damp climates. In fact, in damp climates, a whole waterproof gardening suit is invaluable. There is always planting to do in the rain, and a waterproof hat, jacket and trousers tucked in a pair of boots will keep you nice and dry!
4. Protect your hands. For light work, potting on or pinching out tomato plants, a disposable plastic pair of gloves or a pair of kitchen rubber gloves will be enough. For heavier work - pruning roses, weeding thistles and nettles, wear heavy duty gardening gloves, or your hands will suffer.
5. Watch those toes! Invest in a pair of steel toe capped boots and wear them! If you're pottering in the greenhouse or doing a little weeding, a simple pair of wellington boots will do, or even sandals if the weather allows. But as soon as you pick up a large tool, your steel toe-caps should be worn. If you're not used to them, these boots can feel heavy and cumbersome at first, but stick with it. If you're doing heavy work, you need heavy boots.
6. And last but certainly not least, you must protect your skin. Moisturise all exposed body parts whenever you are woking in the garden, rain or shine. Working outside will give you a nice healthy glow, but the wind and sun will dry your skin given half a chance.
So there we have it, not a fashion designer's dream, but these 6 garden fashion tips will make life a lot more comfortable, and safer, for the average home gardener. Happy gardening!

by Julie Gabriel Image includes everything that is in your appearance – not simply how well you put your makeup on and style your hair, and not just how expensive is your bag, but also how well you put all these things together. Sometimes a tiny flaw can ruin the carefully concocted look. Don’t let that happen to you. Fashion Mistake #1. Skirt too skimpy.
The skirt should not rise up to mid-thigh when you sit down. If you have to pull it down constantly then maybe it is too short or too tight. Make it a rule of thumb to keep the skirt for daytime attires maximum an inch above the knee.
Fashion Mistake #2. Silly, not cute.
Avoid frilly blouses when you don’t party. It’s a popular belief that a frilly blouse will make you look feminine and romantic; instead it makes you look unprofessional and frivolous. Choose a blouse in ivory or white – it goes well with everything.
Fashion Mistake #3. Bare legs in winter.
Leave it to chic Mahnattanites in Sex And The City to show off bare legs with manolos when it’s about to snow. Sheer tights will look stylish enough and keep your assets warm and healthy. Splurge on Wolford tights for a special occasion.
Fashion Mistake #4. Too many accessories.
Keep accessories to a minimum. Button or hoop earrings are acceptable for a daytime look. For an evening, make one piece, e.g. chandelier earrings or embellished purse, a key element and keep the rest of accessories neutral. Hang on to simplicity with your watch: no cartoon characters or day-glo details are appropriate, unless it’s a Swatch.
Fashion Mistake #5. Neon, not neutral makeup.
Be clean and look polished. Make-up is a must in professional world, even if you never wear it. Blusher, mascara and clear powder are minimum. Use the foundation to conceal blemishes. The no-makeup look is fine for college, not for grown-up life. Avoid bright shimmery glosses or eye shadows unless you go out.
Fashion Mistake #6. Showing too much skin.
Especially between the low-rise jeans and top. If you absolutely need to show a bit of your belly make sure it’s tan, slender and depilated. No love handles with those sevens, please!
Fashion Mistake #7. Showing dark roots.
Be honest to yourself: you are no Carrie Bradshaw to look chic with black roots and blonde tips; besides, there was a team of hi-end stylists working on the set of SATC for hours to make those outgrown roots look appropriate. In real life, dark roots send a clear signal that you are either out of money or out of style.
Fashion Mistake #8. Revealing plain white (or black) bra straps and thongs
Some underwear just looks better inside. No matter how expensive your plain white sports bra is, keep it concealed. Unless, of course, it’s $150 pink Lejaby bra with straps of Belgian lace or bejewelled triangle at the crossing of the thong. Same applies to transparency level of your clothes: wear white or nude bra with white shirts and black/colored bras with black ones, and not vice versa.
Fashion Mistake #9. Wearing trousers too short.
It makes sense to have several pairs of jeans and pants of different length, ones for low heels and ones for higher heels. Wearing too long jeans with casual flat shoes or uggs result in stained and worn-out hems, and that’s another huge no-no!
Fashion Mistake #10. Looking too casual.
The inventors of Ugg boots could never imagine that the comfiness and anti-stylishness of these lovely shearling creations will inspire millions of girls to wear them with out-of-shape stained track pants, oversized sweatshirts and messy ponytails. Uggs and ugg-alikes stand out much better if worn with pristine designer jeans, and track pants are just meant to be worn with equally chic running shoes. You can slouch up to a certain degree, and then you’ll look plain ridiculous.

by Rick Valens Dress to look young? Well think about it, how are you normally dressed? How do you normally present yourself to others? Unknowingly, a lot of us have been wearing clothes that made us appear older than we actually are, especially due to the nature of our work. To maintain a youthful look, a lot of women have invested heavily on skin care products. Many at times neglecting the very basic, the clothing they wore everyday, the way they are dressed. Some due to their profession didn’t even realize that all these while; they are actually dressing to look old! Anti-ageing cream simply won’t just do magic to them.
To look young and pretty isn’t really that difficult. All you need is to spend a little time & effort, giving yourself a little touch up.
Tips:
Try out a new hairstyle. Visit a hairdresser, they will be able to advise and styled your hair to suit you, bringing out that radiant in you.
If you are still wearing glasses, why not give it a try with contact lens? You can have excellent peripheral vision and at the same time, ease, comfort and convenience. Not forgetting to mention, a more youthful look. Don’t you love the way you naturally look without your glasses?
Put on some light makeup to help lift your face, bringing out that natural beauty in you. Do however avoid too heavy a makeup; a heavy eye makeup tends to add ages to the look.
Try out new styles; add a little color to your daily wear. Yes, appropriate dressing for work is important, especially when your job involves frequent meeting with clients. But still, that doesn’t mean that you have to stick to the same old boring dull clothing everyday. Well, as long as they are not too short, too tight, too revealing and too bright, you can still have fun with mixing and matching while maintaining your professional image.
For instance, instead of the usual dull black pants & skirt, you can also go for a Glencheck Pants, Ice Blue Cotton Flare Leg Pants, a Pink Stretch Twill Pencil Skirt, White Pleated knee Skirt…
Matching them with Yellow Stretch Corduroy Belted Blouse, Mint Chiffon V-neck Blouse, a White, Blue & Red Stripe Button Front Shirt… Perhaps even a Blue Dot Capsleeve Jersey Dress?
Many work place, has nonetheless also adopted the idea of a Casual Friday. A printed tee with faded stretch denim jean? Why Not? Well and of course not forgetting the weekends. A Sporty & Youthful look? It’s your weekend you call the shots!
Hmm… Save the best for the last? Well, there’s no need to wait for any special occasion to doll yourself up. You deserve to look your best everyday. Last but not least, put on a smile…

by Diana Pemberton-Sikes When I recently advised a client to study a few fashion magazines to glean some ideas for the upcoming season, she flatly refused. "I HATE those things!" she told me vehemently. "Skinny girls, expensive clothes - what does that have to do with my life? Nothing!"
Now since this isn't the first time I've heard this argument, I realized that she was missing the point of the exercise - much like the women who tell me that VOGUE or W are "their bibles." In this corner, we have someone who's way too caught up in her own reality; in the other, we have someone who's much too caught up in someone else's. Let's all move a bit more to the center and learn how to read these things properly, shall we? We'll all dress a lot better for it.
Let's start with a little dissection first, then move on to the "how to" part of the lesson.
THE MODELS
Overall, fashion magazines tend to show young, thin, attractive people in their pages for the exact same reason that grocers tend to polish their apples and car dealers tend to have you test drive clean cars: because it sells more. It's as simple as that. Fashion Marketing 101. Whether you agree with it or not is beside the point; it works -- VERY well.
So well, in fact, that somewhere along the line, many women went from trying to determine whether the clothing being shown would work well on their bodies to bemoaning the fact that their bodies don't look like the mannequins. Let me let you in on a secret: those girls don't look like that every day, either. They have an army of people to get the hair, makeup, clothes, and lighting just right. If that doesn't work, they airbrush the photos to get the right look. And if the model packs on a few pounds or starts to show signs of ageing, she's replaced. Nothing like being a "has been" by the age of 30, eh?
What a shame that so many teenage girls and women have allowed the slick marketing to muddle their thinking and impact their self esteem. Don't be one of them. Look at the clothes and the mood that the picture evokes; don't compare yourselves to the mannequins.
THE SETTINGS
In fashion magazines, you'll often see a beautiful girl in gorgeous clothes in an enviable setting surrounded by handsome men. If only, right? Well, that's part of the marketing. It's called projecting, and if you've ever envisioned yourself swapping places with the gal in the picture, the marketers have done their job. It's a set up. A complete fabrication. A ruse. Remember that the next time you see a shot that makes you want to rush right out and buy the clothes you see so you can be just like the girl in the picture.
THE ADS
Ever wonder why you see so many high end designers advertising in fashion magazines and why the fashion magazines, in turn, show so many of those same designers in their editorial photo spreads? It's no coincidence. Those one-page ads are VERY expensive, often costing tens of thousands (or more), depending on the magazine's circulation. So the fashion houses don't spend all their advertising dollars in one place. Oh, no.
They'll put a portion of their budget into ads, a portion into lending clothes to magazines for photo shoots, and a portion into creating clothes for celebrities for red carpet and other media events. That way, they spread the name recognition around. It's clever - and expensive. But it works. If you love labels and see a look you like in a couple of fashion magazines and on a favorite celebrity, wouldn't you be more inclined to buy it if you had the money? Many are. A look through the society pages will tell you as much.
THE LESSON
So now that we've addressed the models, ads, and editorial spreads, here's what you SHOULD be looking for when you read a fashion magazine (and yes, it's okay to rip out pages and put them in a file for future reference - but only if you own the magazine!):
1. The Trends
Fashion magazines will call them "must have" items, but look at trends skeptically to see whether they fit your body, clothing personality, and lifestyle. Don't worry about the price. If you find something you like and want to wear, look for an inexpensive version of the trend at your favorite discount or outlet store. Buy cheap, wear often, and discard when then trend is over.
2. The Updated Classics
Most women recognize that classic styles are a good value, and fashion magazines know this. So they'll show trendy new ways to wear classic styles and give you plenty of ideas in the process. All you have to do is take a moment to break it down to see how you can apply this to your own closet.
3. The Designers
If you have a "thing" for designer labels, high end fashion magazines (Vogue, W, Marie Claire, Town and Country) are a great place to learn about the different fashion house philosophies. Even if you can't afford those brand names, don't fret. If you find a look you really like, you'll probably be able to find it a little later in the season in a budget-friendly copy-cat version.
4. Styling Ideas
Styling refers to the way the clothing and accessories are presented in a picture. Look at how the clothes are layered, draped, or wrapped. Look at how the jewelry is worn. See what they did with the bag and shoes. Look at the hair and other accessories. If you see something you like, try creating a similar look with pieces from your own closet. You'll be surprised how you can breathe new life into your old standbys just by wearing them a different way.
5. Hair and Makeup
Are you in a hair and makeup rut? Peruse a few fashion magazines to see what's hot for the season. Not only will you glean some new looks, you may discover that a new 'do may be all you need to look "au currant" this year.
Fashion magazines are a great way to learn all about what's happening in fashion AS LONG AS you remember that they're created to sell clothes and accessories. Forget about the models and the price tags and focus instead on the clothes, trends, and styling ideas that might work for you. Then copy or adapt them to your own budget and lifestyle. Before you know it, you may look like you stepped out of a fashion magazine - whatever your age, shape, size, or budget.

by Carrie Johnson Color is everywhere, in your clothes, in your jewelry. Color is life. Fashion and color coordination can make or break your carefuly planned outfit. Here's a bit of color theory with a fashionista bent.
Primary colors
These are red, blue and yellow. In theory, you can make any color from these three primaries (except white, which is really an absence of color). In practice, it depends on what red, blue or yellow you start with, but we are not mixing paints here, so just remember that the primary colors are red, blue and yellow. You'll learn why in the next step.
The secondary colors are the colors you get from mixing equal amounts of any two primaries. (If the primaries are pure, mixing all three will give you black.)
The secondaries are purple, orange and green.
Now why do you care?
Well, primaries and secondaries together give us complementary colors. The complement of the color is the color directly across from it on the color wheel, or if starting with a primary, the color made from mixing the other two primaries. So essentially a color and its complement contain all of the primaries between them.
Red's compliment is green (Merry Christmas!). Yellow's complement is purple. Blue's complement is orange. This is as much contrast as you can get between colors of the same value (brightness or darkness). So if you want to make a bold statement, the primaries are a treat.
Enter the secondaries
The secondary colors are made by mixing equal parts of any two complementaries. So the secondary colors are green (yellow and blue), orange (yellow and red) and purple (blue and red).
Let's say you have a yellow dress and you want this outfit to be a traffic stopper. If it's for daytime, you can use bold purple jewelry and accessories. This classic combination of purple and yellow is eye catching. It can be sophisticated and definite or more playful, depending on the yellow and purple you start out with.
However, you don't always want to be quite that much the center of attention. What do you do to make more subtle fashion statements, but still use colors well?
The yellow and purple we used above are complementary colors. This means they are directly across from each other on the color wheel.
The colors to each side of our main color's complement are the triad colors. (Triad because the color you start with plus the two others make three colors total.) The triads are our friends for choosing jewelry or other accessories. Let's look at our yellow dress again. This time we're wearing it to a business meeting. What would be appropriate jewelry? Gold on yellow is too close -- it will tend to wash out. The whole outfit will look drab (more drab than if you didn't use the gold jewelry).
Silver will work, particularly if the silver is a bit pale and the yellow of the dress if very vivid. But you don't have to stick with gold or silver. There are many colored gems and jewels out there. Try a sapphire necklace. The blue will nicely set off the yellow and both will sparkle. Or a red brooch. The red can tend towards orange for a brighter effect or towards blue for more contrast.
Now how about the vivid purple blouse you just adore? How to accessorize it? The purple is already such a bold color. Well, we'll do exactly the opposite of what we have done with our yellow dress, since purple is yellow's complement.
For our purple blouse, if you want to be bold and outrageous, go for bright gold (yellow) or just plain yellow jewelry. Silver will not work with the purple since the blue of the silver is too close to our purple color (as the gold was on the yellow dress). Of course red is wonderful with purple, just showing that every rule is made to be broken (with discrimination and taste, of course).
We can team our purple blouse with a tan skirt (tan being a form of yellow) and dress it down for a business meeting. We'll want our jewelry to be a little more subtle. In this case, rather than yellow, let's use the triad colors to purple -- orange or green. These may seem like bold choices, but remember you want your jewelry to be seen, not to blend into the woodwork.
How about an amber pendant? This would be sophisticated and would be set off wonderfully by the purple background without being garish.
Or an emerald brooch and earrings, or a green frog pin. The possibilities are endless within your basic color choices. If you stick with these color constraints, you will not go wrong.
Now let's consider the classic grey business suit. You may be thinking that your grey suit is neutral so you can choose any color at all. This is rarely the case and can be the cause of that ensemble that doesn't quite work.
Most greys tend towards blue (cool) or red/yellow (warm). So first determine if your suit is cool grey or warm grey. If you're having trouble with this (and it can be tough at first), try holding it up to other grey items in your house. You'll start to notice that it looks a bit redder (or yellower) or a bit more blue. This will help you determine the color bias of your grey suit.
Most warm grey used in clothing is a reddish grey. This is because red complements the complexion. But you will find some yellowish greys, particularly in garments with very sophisticated color.
Let's say our suit is a cool grey, so for the purposes of our color choice we'll consider it blue. The complement of blue is orange.
We want to keep this a business suit, so we'll pick the triad to each side of the orange to start with. Red and yellow. This tells us that gold will be a perfect choice for our grey suit. Silver is too blue and would wash out the outfit. You may have noticed that gold tends towards red or yellow. If you are using more than one accessory with the gold, determine whether the primary gold jewelry you will be wearing is reddish gold or yellow gold.
This is done just as we did with the suit itself, by comparing it with other colors.
If the gold is reddish, then keep your other accessories in the red and yellow range. If the gold if yellow, keep the other colors in the yellow orange range.
Note, the description "yellow gold" is for any gold that is not white (silvery). Yellow golds range from a deep red to a very pale yellow, so be sure to check each piece of jewelry when putting together your outfit. A red gold and a yellow gold next to each other will look subtly wrong, unless they are carefully combined in a single piece by a master jeweler. A lack of understanding about the tendencies of gold to be manifested as different colors results in fashion mistakes are that are hard to pin down.
So, let's say we've chosen a beautiful golden horse pin as our primary jewelry piece. We look at it and realize that it tends, ever so slightly, towards red. This makes the rest of our accessorizing easy.
We'll go for red and even towards the cooler reds (those tending towards purple, rather than towards the yellows and oranges). With our golden horse brooch and a deep slightly purplish red scarf our grey business suit stays business-like but acquires a powerful feminine appeal.
If you want more color, choose red's triads, blue or yellow.
So, when choosing the jewelry to complement any outfit follow three simple steps and you won't go wrong:
1) Determine the base color of your clothing. This is the dominant color. If you’re wearing the purple blouse with a tan skirt the purple is the dominant color.
If the outfit has a pattern, squint at it and try to see what color feels most dominant (this is an old artist's trick). If no particular color stands out, determine if the overall pattern is cool or warm as we did with our grey suit. Again squinting helps.
2) Find the complement of this color on your color wheel. If you really want to stand out, use the complement and stop at this step -- you're done!
3) Look at the triad colors next to the complement. These are most often the colors you will use for your accessories. If you want a brighter look you can use both triads. For a more subtle look, choose one or the other and then use variations on this color (the variations on any one color are almost endless).
That's it -- three easy steps that will assure that your outfits are always tres chic and save you hours trying to figure out what's just not quite right or choosing by hit and miss.
Of course, fashion colors change from year to year, but you now understand color combinations and how to put them together in wow combinations, whatever colors your starting with.
Coming in part two, how colors effect each other.
